Biobloc

Most effective for children under 10 years of age, Biobloc Orthotropics was created by Dr. John Mew in the 1950s. Developed to solve the problems unaddressed by traditional orthodontics, this system, which is a form of myofunctional therapy, optimizes facial development of a young patient’s upper and lower jaws. It also functions as correction for poor oral posture, which contributes to unfavorable growth.

The first step in providing myofunctional therapy using Biobloc Orthotropics is wearing a removable appliance, called a Hang Expancer, for about 4-6 months. This device will widen the upper jaw, increase space for the tongue to fit properly in the mouth, and ultimately move the upper front teeth into their ideal position.

Once the upper teeth have been moved, the child will wear another removable appliance, the Biobloc. This device helps administer myofunctional therapy and postures the lower jaw forward over a period of 6-8 months. Treatment time depends on the problem’s extent and the child’s cooperation. After a time, this optimal jaw position will be the natural, habitual resting position, and the patient can scale back use. Eventually, they’ll taper off use completely.
