What is neuromuscular dentistry?

Neuromuscular dentistry is explained on our homepage. In short, neuromuscular refers to nerves and muscles, and dentistry refers to teeth. Neuromuscular dentistry is the term we use to describe the philosophy that all components of the mouth should work in harmony for optimal oral health, comfort, and longevity. This includes teeth, gums, muscles, nerves, and jaw joints. Learn more about neuromuscular dentistry and TMJ therapy (temporomandibular joints or jaw joints) here.

How is neuromuscular orthodontics different from traditional orthodontics?

Dr. Dalton addresses orthodontics with a neuromuscular philosophy. This means that when he plans an orthodontic case, his goal is not only to align teeth so that they look straight and function well, but they must also create a comfortable bite that works in unity with the entire mouth/chewing system. Upper and lower teeth must fit together properly so that the jaw joints (TMJ) are aligned well. Neuromuscular orthodontics can actually reposition an improper bite to promote harmony within the chewing system. It can eliminate teeth grinding and TMJ dysfunction, as well.

Why haven't other dentists told me about neuromuscular dentistry?

Neuromuscular dentistry is an advanced way of thinking, and this school of thought is not taught in universities. Not all dentists believe that neuromuscular dentistry is a valid concept. Dr. Dalton believes that when the body works in harmony, the patient can enjoy a better quality of life with reduced potential for future problems.

Why are wisdom teeth a problem?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, can be difficult to brush and floss. Food debris, plaque, and tartar not removed from these teeth will promote cavities and disease. In addition, wisdom teeth can cause crowding, which means your nice, straight front teeth might shift out of place and overlap one another. From a neuromuscular perspective, the shifted teeth will alter your comfortable bite. Associated nerves and muscles in the jaw may become stressed, which can lead to teeth grinding and/or TMJ dysfunction.

Will Invisalign straighten my teeth?

Invisalign is best suited for patients who have previously worn braces or who need cosmetic tooth repositioning. When proper occlusion is the primary reason for orthodontic therapy, Invisalign may not produce the lasting results Dr. Dalton is committed to providing. In these situations, Dr. Dalton will discuss alternatives. Many esthetic options are available with contemporary adult orthodontics.
