If you experience any of these symptoms, please let Dr. Dalton know. You may have TMJ disorder.
Dr. Dalton subscribes to the philosophy of neuromuscular dentistry. Neuro refers to nerves; muscular refers to muscles; dentistry refers to teeth. Neuromuscular dentistry deals with the mouth as a system that involves the teeth, jaws, and bite/occlusion. When jaw joints are not properly aligned as a result of a orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD) or another issue requiring myofunctional therapy, nerves can become over-stimulated, muscles fatigued. This can cause the symptoms listed above.
Jaw joints are technically known as temporomandibular joints or TMJ joints. Misalignment of the TMJ joints, often caused an OMD, results in TMJ disorder, TMJ dysfunction, or TMD. These terms are synonymous.
As a neuromuscular dentist, Dr. Dalton trained at LVI, the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. There, he learned to use a TENS unit to relax jaw muscles and a K7 to record proper jaw alignment. Once the optimal position is determined, Dr. Dalton can administer therapy for TMJ disorder.
TMJ therapy may include:
Dr. Dalton can help patients achieve immediate but temporary relief from symptoms by massaging or applying pressure to trigger points. Trigger points are muscle knots that often occur in the back and shoulders and can cause pain in the neck and head.
